© Alexander Campbell – Classical Source: “This Khovanshchina shows Welsh National Opera at its absolute best, a monumental if occasionally erratic work, requiring huge forces. Johan Engel’s set design, framed by angled and tilting walls and steps, beautifully lit by Fabrice Kebour, is a triumph in conjuring the atmosphere of the unsettling and revolutionary times depicted. Costuming also helps elaborate which of the various factions of the Russian populace are involved, as does David Pountney’s insightful direction.”

© Rian Evans – The Guardian: “Director David Pountney’s staging is set just after the revolution, with the strong, constructivist lines of the late Johan Engels’ design brilliantly channelling El Lissitzky and Kasimir Malevich, but the contemporary resonances are even more chilling today than a decade ago.”
